Flight overbooking: Corendon Airlines must compensate affected passengers
Airline overbooking is a practice commonly used by airlines. Overview of what is behind this business strategy.
Also called overbooking, overbooking refers to the practice implemented by airlines which consists of selling more plane tickets than the capacity of the plane ticket, the objective of which is to ensure that the plane without an empty seat in plane, in anticipation of the absence of some travellers.
Passengers on an overbooked Corendon Airlines flight: What are their rights?
The airline being at fault in the event of overbooking, it must offer you another flight to the same destination. If this is not possible or you refuse, your place must be refunded. In addition to this reimbursement, you will have to be compensated and the company must provide you with a document telling you how to claim this compensation.
When no traveler withdraws, the number of people applying for boarding is naturally greater than the capacity of the aircraft. Travelers are therefore denied boarding even though they have a valid plane ticket. For people who are victims of overbooking, there are then two options: Either wait for another flight, or give up their reservation and obtain a refund, and in both cases, they will be entitled to compensation.
Take an alternative flight
The airline is obliged to offer you another flight to the same destination, under equivalent travel conditions, and without changing the price of your plane ticket. Throughout the duration of your wait, the airline is also required to cover all your expenses to meet your primary needs. It must provide you with refreshments and catering and offer you an accommodation offer (with associated transport) when the second flight offered cannot be offered on the same day.
Cancel the reservation and request a refund
If otherwise, you decide to cancel your trip with Corendon Airlines, know that you have the right to cancel your reservation if the delay recorded reaches five hours.
In this case, the airline is obliged to offer you a full refund of your plane ticket. This reimbursement is sometimes subject to conditions, but must be accompanied by additional compensation to compensate for the damage suffered.
Overbooked flight: Claim financial compensation from Corendon Airlines
Having to give up your flight or having to wait several hours for another flight when you have normally booked your plane ticket is a very difficult situation for travelers who are victims of overbooking. To compensate for the moral damage suffered, the carrier is therefore required to pay compensation to the injured passengers. When notifying the refusal to board for overbooking, he must provide you with a document indicating the procedure to follow to claim your compensation. In practice, the amount of compensation for overbooking is regulated. It mainly depends on the distance of the flight and the destination with three levels of compensation:
– 250 euros for a flight up to 1,500 km;
– 400 euros for a flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km;
– 600 euros for a flight of more than 3,500 km between the EU and a non-EU country.
A delay of three hours must be recorded
All people whose flight is canceled or delayed by more than three hours on a flight departing from a European Union country can benefit from it.
Note that compensation will only be possible for a flight departing from a city in the European Union. And to obtain these sums, the deadline is wide: you have five years to file a claim with the airline concerned.
